Overview

Welding is one of the most important technologies in the manufacturing industry. The most common welding process used by the automotive industry is Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) due to the automated continuous welding process. It is a popular choice for automotive axles, chassis, and bodywork as it has the potential to weld both aluminium and steel. This course covers the basics of the GMAW process along with inspection and testing through hands-on training.

Eligibility

  • I.T.I. Welders and Welding Operators, Diploma Students
  • Pre-requisites: Arc welding experience or candidates conversant with Arc Welding

  • To create basic knowledge about fundamentals of welding technology
  • To gain knowledge of various welding applications
  • To explain weld defects and troubleshooting

  • Safety precautions during welding
  • Introduction to welding
  • Familiarization with GMAW process equipment and accessories
  • Power source and accessories
  • Different modes of metal transfer
  • Welding wire, types, and specification
  • Types of shielding gases and their importance
  • Edge preparation methods for welding
  • Bead on plate, fillet weld joints, and butt joints in the flat position
  • Parameter settings (adjustments of current and voltage control)
  • Practice to reach an acceptable standard
  • Troubleshooting in MIG/MAG welding
  • Common welding defects, causes & remedies
  • Standard operating procedure
  • Inspection and testing of weldments

Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Appreciate the importance of safe working procedures in welding
  • Understand the GMAW process and its applications
  • Know the correct welding techniques – theoretical fundamentals of the MIG process, which are then reinforced during the practical sessions
  • Improve skill levels – the initial practical focuses on the correct set-up of a MIG welding set and how to fault-find, whilst the second session allows operators the opportunity to practice techniques
  • Recognise, appreciate their causes, and rectify the welding defects
  • Adjust voltage and current settings to suit the work to be undertaken
  • Weld in the flat condition to an acceptable standard

  • Attendance: 100%
  • Assignment completion: 100%
  • Post-assessment score: 70% minimum
  • Duration: 6 Days (1 Day Theory and 5 Days Practical)
  • Mode: Face-to-Face
  • The programs will be certified by TVSTS.
