Overview

GD&T is very essential to convey the real design intent and thereby ensure individual parts and assemblies are manufactured in order to realize the desired product functions. This advanced in-depth course in GD&T is aimed to help the design, manufacturing, and quality engineers to clearly interpret and apply the GD&T concepts in the individual parts as well as assemblies. This course covers the interpretation and application of each GD&T specification on the product function, manufacturing process design, and measurement methods. Application of bonus tolerances, modifiers, composite tolerances, etc., are explained in detail in this course. The topics in this program will be explained with PPTs, relevant videos, and animations. Highly interactive sessions are planned through instructor-led training.

Eligibility

  • Practicing engineers from Design, Manufacturing, Production, Tool Engineering, and Quality with a minimum of 1 year of experience
  • Pre-requisites: Basic knowledge of engineering drawings, limits, fits & tolerances.

Course Content

  • Introduction – Overview of GD&T
  • Review of various geometric dimensions – Form, Orientation, Profile, Runout, and Location tolerances – Interpretation, application, and measurement techniques – Comparison of ASME and ISO standards
  • Datum reference frames and datum targets
  • Bonus tolerance working with M, L, S modifiers – Datum modifiers
  • Composite tolerances
  • Other modifiers P, F, T, CF, U, etc. – Further explanation on profile tolerances (Unilateral, Unequally disposed, Between points) – Envelope requirements (ISO 8015)
  • Product design application exercises on GD&T – Design of mating parts – Calculation for fixed and floating fasteners
  • Manufacturing process design, fixture and gage design for GD&T – Application exercises
  • GD&T applicable to machine tools – Importance – Measurement methods

Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
  • Interpret various GD&T symbols and the modifiers
  • Explain the design intent of various GD&T specifications
  • Compute bonus tolerances based on the modifier symbols
  • Apply GD&T in designing parts and assemblies
  • Apply GD&T in manufacturing processes, fixture, and gage design
  • Understand the importance of geometric specifications in machine tools

Certification Criteria

  • Attendance: 90% minimum
  • Assignment completion: 100%
  • Post-test assessment score: 70% minimum
